Mounting an FTP Site to a Windows Drive

Mounting an FTP Site to a Windows DriveThis is another great tool that I just downloaded and tried out.  Again, if you’re a web developer, you know how nasty some of those FTP tools can be and how cumbersome it is to edit a file, save it, FTP it, then refresh your browser to see the changes.

Of course, if I still had a decent deveoplent environment, I probably wouldn’t be complaining, but who really does!?  Anyway, this nifty little tool allows you to “mount” FTP sites to a windows drive.  It’s just like mapping a drive letter to a network share, but this is mapped to your FTP server.

With this, to “log on” to my FTP site, all I have to do us run Z:/<ftpname> in my command prompt and I’m there.  I have all the options with a right click as I do with all of my other files.  So if I’m editting an image, I can open it directly with Photoshop, or if it’s a php file, I can open it directly with Notepad++ and edit it in place.  When I save it, the changes are immediately active on my website.  Of course, this doesnt’ come without caution.  I’m always backed up and I know what I’m doing.  This is a good way to kill your whole website if you don’t know what you’re doing Mounting an FTP Site to a Windows Drive

Check it out here.  Enjoy.

In fact, I think I’ll go ahead and back-up now

Dang, you had me scared there. That’s just a link to the wordpress blog that I found the link in. It was pointing to http://riccardo.raneri.it/blog/eng/index.php/2007/08/04/how-to-mount-an-ftp-as-a-windows-drive/.

It looks like his database has crashed.

Here’s Googles cached version in case you think I’m up to something ;-)

Anyway, ignore all that. His blog just links to the download site anyway. I was just trying to give him credit for the link. Here’s where I downloaded it from :

Ah ok. Your blog struck me as someone very devoted to technology and just wanting to share your knowledge. So that did surprise me at first. Thanks for the clear up. I’ve now downloaded this tool. Thanks. And sorry if I came off harsh.

No problem. I would have done the same thing. Dunno what happened to that guy’s site though. I know I didn’t send him enough traffic to take him down, lol. How the tool works out for you, I think it’s pretty cool myself.
